Numerous island Municipalities in Greece have started a search to find ways which will enable them to obtain a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly mobility and transportation system, especially during the summer months, when their population surges because of the thousands of tourists who visit them.
That is the reason why the Sustainable Island Mobility Plan (SIMP) was created, in order to offer easy, economic and flexible solutions to the mobility issue of the Greek islands by using methods such as the wide limitation of the use of cars, the promotion of carpooling, the introduction of electric vehicles, the reduction of speed limits and the improvement of existing parking spaces as well as the creation of new ones.
The first Sustainable Island Mobility Plan is to be designed for the island of Sifnos, with Kea, Small Cyclades and Naxos to follow.
The initiative has attracted the interest of many European Institutions and Funds.
